Manfred M. Fischer
(born February 25, 1947) is an Austrian and German regional scientist, Professor Emeritus at the Vienna University of Economics and Business [WU Vie
nna] and Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.

Fischer earned his Dr. rer. nat. degree summa cum laude in geography and mathematics from Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen (Germany) in 1975 and his habil. degree (venia docendi) in social and economic geography from University of Vienna in 1982 with a thesis entitled A Methodology of Regional Taxonomy.

He was visiting professor at the Oskar Lange Academy of Economics in Wroclav (Poland) in summer 1978, and at the University of California in Santa Barbara in 1988 before he joined the faculty of WU – as chair of economic geography – at the end of 1988. He is founding co-editor of both the Journal of Geographical Systems and the Springer book series Advances in Spatial Science.

Manfred M. Fischer is known in academia for his work on quantitative methods and models in regional science and related fields. He has published 40 books (monographs and edited volumes) including the prestigious Handbook of Regional Science (three volumes) and over 200 scholarly articles in academic journals and edited volumes. Some of his books have been translated into Chinese.

In 2015, he was awarded the Jean Paelinck RSAI [Regional Science Association International, an association with over 5,000 members] Award for distinguished lifelong scholarship in regional science methods, and in 2016 the Founder’s Medal, the highest accolade of the RSAI, awarded every four years to scholars who have made significant lifelong contributions to regional science.
