Finding the right therapist

The very nature of counselling means that it is extremely important to find a therapist that you feel comfortable with. Often intimate details and sometimes painful life experiences are disclosed to your counsellor. It is essential to feel that you can trust your therapist, be open with them and feel safe.

There are also many different theoretical approaches in counselling and some approaches may be more suitable for you or for dealing with your problems than others.

I work as an integrative counsellor which means that I use different types of therapy depending on client need. My main areas of working are Humanistic, Person-Centred, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, I also use elements of Neuro Linguistic Programming. I choose to work in this way because I strongly believe that, as unique individuals, one size does not fit all. I feel that it is in the service of the client to fit the therapy to them and not vice versa.

If you would like to find out more about different theoretical approaches and how to find the right therapist, the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, Mind and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy all have useful information on their websites.
