What is counselling?

Counselling offers an opportunity to make sense of what is happening to you at difficult times in your life. The work you do with the counsellor may be concerned with addressing and resolving specific problems, making decisions, coping with crisis or inner conflict, mourning losses, improving relationships or changing destructive patterns.

Counselling requires the active involvement of clients and therefore is essentially a voluntary activity. It requires a willingness to face what are sometimes difficult issues with someone who will help you to reflect on and better understand your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and explore ways of making changes.

The counsellor does not seek to advise and cannot provide answers, but instead supports clients in discovering their own solutions in a safe, confidential and professional environment.

"The counsellor's role is to facilitate the client's work in ways which respect the client's values, personal resources and capacity for self-determination." The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
