The Macmillan Mammoth Quiz was first trialled in 2009 when nine quizzes were held in the Northamptonshire and Peterborough area, raising £6,400 for Macmillan Cancer Support. From this success it was decided to try to grow the event year on year building up to a Guinness Book of Records attempt in 2012, our Olympic year. It was felt that the attempt at a World Record would give the quiz impetus and encourage more organisations and individuals to join in.

The idea is that of a simultaneous quiz, the same quiz being held on the same day at the same time, throughout the country. This is enabled by the Oundle Support Group producing a pack containing the quiz, guidance on running it and information about Macmillan. The pack is then sent out to applicants for a nominal fee of £10. It is then up to the organisation or individual as to how much they donate back to Macmillan. The generosity of those running the quizzes in aid of this worthy charity has seen just over £214,000 raised between 2009 and 2015.

With the record attempt in 2012 the Guinness Book of Records paperwork was added to the pack and the event moved to another level. Over 100 applications were received for the pack with venues as far and wide as Montrose in the north and Falmouth in the south. An application was also received from Sri Lanka who, although they thoroughly enjoyed the quiz, were unable to participate in the record attempt due to the time difference. Ultimately the Oundle Support Group were delighted to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Simultaneous Quiz.

As one of the marketing tools, to further promote the Quiz, some of the Committee applied to go
on the BBC TV Show
"Eggheads". After a successful audition in Birmingham, filming took place on Monday 17th October 2011 in Glasgow. The show aired in May 2012 and although the Mammoth Quizzers did not win the show, they were delighted to gain
the support of Daphne Fowler, one of the Eggheads, who very kindly acted as Question Master at the quiz in Weston Super Mare. Since then Daphne has very kindly agreed to act as the Patron of the Mammoth Quiz. You can find out more about Daphne by accessing her Website using the link on the Useful Links page.

The Quiz has continued to grow from strength to strength. It is the ambition of the group to continue to make the Mammoth Quiz bigger and better than ever before and build upon what is now a very successful event in the Macmillan calendar.
