Welcome

The club meets at 7:30 on Friday evenings, between September and early May, at Manor Park Club, Albert Road North, Malvern WR14 2TL. This is next to Malvern Hills College.

New players are always welcome.

The club has teams in the Worcestershire Championship and the Worcestershire Challengers.

October 9th

Malvern won their opening Championship fixture 4-1 with wins from Geoffrey Herbert, Joshua Clarke, Henry Spedding and Lee davis. Full results

October 6th

Lee Davis travelled down to Cardiff this weekend to play in the Welsh Seniors' (over 65s) Championship and came away as joint winner for the second time in the last three years. This to add to his outright victory in the Welsh Seniors in 2017 when the competition was for over 60s. Here he is photographed with the trophy alongside joint winner Peter Varley of the Newport club.

October 2nd

John Knee drew with Scott oxtoby in the Club Championship.

September 18th

Alex Nicholls won the first game in the 2026/2027 Club Championship.

September 16th

Peter Wells played a simultaneous display at Hereford against around 20 players. Ben Mason of Malvern took part and found a clever tactic to win his game. The full game can be found on the games page. This is the final position.

August 26th

Malvern scored 2/4 in the second and final round of the Summer Cup held at Meadow Farm in Redditch. Joshua Clarke won his game. This result means that with 4.5/8, Malvern finished second behind Longbridge A, just edging out Redditch on tie-break. Results.

Headlines from last season 2025-2026

Malvern had a another solid season, finishing 3rd out of 6 in the Championship League and 3rd out of 4 in the Challengers League.

Nine different players took part in the Championship where we had 4 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses. The two best performers were James Allsopp (2.5/4) and Henry Spedding (5/8). The Challengers side fielded 10 different players and had 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Matthew Jordan (3/3) and John Chester (1/1) scored 100% with Alex Nicholls and Brian Turner also scoring well.

Lee Davis and Ian Clarke played for Worcestershire in the Minor Counties and Alex Nicholls represented the County in the U1650 competition.

The Club Championship was won by Henry Spedding and Lee Davis with 7/8. Keith Baxter was third with 5.5/8.

Alex Nicholls finished first in the group stage of the Ball Cup with 4.5/6 but lost in the final to Graham Kemp. keith Baxter, Ian Clarke and Lee Davis took part in the Ball Cup. Keith was very unfortunate to just miss out on the knockout stage after scoring 3.5/5. Ian scored 3/5 and just sneaked through to the knockout stage where he lost to the eventual winner Joseph Friar in the semi-final.

Eight Malvern players represented the club at the Worcestershire Chess Association County Championships, held at King’s in Worcester in August. Lee Davis finished third with four out of five and was once again crowned Veteran Champion, while James Allsopp scored three out of five to retain the Junior Championship. Alex Nicholls, Joshua Clarke and Ian Clarke also scored three points, Keith Baxter 2½, Henry Spedding two out of three and Ben Mason one. Brian Turner was one of the judges for the Paul Sharratt Trophy, awarded for the most enterprising game, which was won by Senior Champion Kevin Hurney of Longbridge.
