Ralph Hayes in his British Machine Tokens, published 1986 had attributed these CLOWN tokens to S.A.M.Co. (Soho Automatic Machine Co., London.) on the basis of this token. In a subsequent supplement No.3, of June 1987, he discounted this as shown in this note below.

Under the title S.A.M.Co. will be found the addition of Ref 337.42 with the obverse reading N.A.M.Co. Knowing CLOWN to be the name of an Amusement Machine the issuers title was presumed to be of the initials S.A.M.Co. as Ref 337.23 reads, this must now be doubtful and leads to a closer look at the other tokens in this and other series. An example of this; shows in Ref No's. 337.1 & 337.32 (C/M) both bear the letters TK which also appear on Ref 379. Possibly they are the initials of another purchaser of CLOWN machines, the initials being included depending on the number purchased and the quantity of tokens required. The same or a similar reason could apply to any series of tokens having counter-marks or cut-outs. N.A.M.Co. Ref 282. are at present the only known issuers having these initials and may have purchased and/or retailed CLOWN machines.
