Welcome! I'm Jaya Maithil, a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian working with Dr. Dan Schwartz & Dr. Aneta Siemiginowska. My research explores supermassive black holes - cosmic giants that shape the evolution of entire galaxies. Using data from the world's most powerful telescopes, I study these extreme objects across multiple wavelengths, from radio waves to X-rays. Through my research, I aim to develop a holistic understanding of these enigmatic phenomena, examining everything from the fundamental properties of their central engines to the large-scale powerful jets they produce.
After completing my integrated Master's in Physics at the National Institute for Science Education and Research in India, I worked as a research intern with Prof. Prajval Shastri at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, India. I earned my Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Wyoming under Prof. Michael Brotherton. My dissertation is titled "A multiwavelength investigation of quasar orientation, black hole mass, and accretion rate: Putting quasars in perspective". At Harvard & Smithsonian, I focus particularly on the emission mechanism of quasar jets. From studying physics in India to exploring supermassive black holes in America, I've pursued my passion for understanding the most extreme cosmic laboratories nature has to offer.
