Lockport, Illinois is known for its downtown neighborhood of historic architecture.  One can enjoy fine or casual dining, outstanding museums,    great shopping, and miles of canal trails to bicycle or walk.

Enjoy our neighborhood of authentically restored buildings.  Many downtown buildings were constructed between 1836 and 1895 of native limestone and brick.  Along the I & M Canal you will find four select    museums, Lock One of the original I & M Canal, Lincoln Landing, Heritage Village and access to downtown   shops and restaurants. Fine or casual dining is available at award winning and casual restaurants; unique galleries and shops are surrounded by traditional architecture. The downtown sites are within walking     distance of free parking. Stop to taste wine, enjoy locally made ice cream and candy, view a fine collection      of art at museums and galleries.  Have a picnic lunch at the Lincoln Landing overlooking the canal.  Lockport  has a friendly small town atmosphere where you can expect service with a smile in the much the same way   that it was offered over one hundred years ago.

Lockport was established in 1836 with plans to start construction of the Illinois & Michigan Canal.
The completion of the canal in 1848 made shipping possible from Chicago to the Mississippi River.  Limestone quarries, grain elevators and Bessemer Steel Companies shipped products to the east and west from Lockport.  Lock One of the I & M Canal and the headquarters of the original Canal Commissioners can be seen here today.
Lockport is still a business center and transporation hub with the Metra train station, Pace Bus routes, route I-355 linking I-80 and I-55, the Des Plaines River, and the Chicago Ship Canal.  Lockport is located within the Chicago Metropolitan area and is just a 45 minute drive to downtown Chicago.
