High School Honors Festival 

Jazz Band Auditions 2013-2014 


Wind Instruments: 

Students will be asked to play three scales: the chromatic scale, and two major scales.  For ranges, etc., see the District 1 Scale guide guide here. (Same requirement as D1 Concert Band, note the addition to all 12 major scales, and scale sheets can be used in the audition)

Students will play the District 1 etude #1. (based on Autumn Leaves)

Students will play the District 1 etude #2.  

Students will sight read. 

Students will be provided with the opportunity to improvise over a Bb Blues progression with a recorded rhythm section accompaniment.  (Note: Students are strongly encouraged to improvise, and the scores for improvisation will be part of the overall score, and will help determine chairs in the Jazz band.)

Note:  Students will only have recorded accompaniment with the blues improvisation. 


Piano/Guitar/Vibraphone:

Students will play the District 1 etude #2.  

Pianists: comping during the etudes is encouraged, but not required. 

Students are responsible to prepare the appropriate rhythm section "style sheet‟ as well. 

Students will sight read. 

Students will be provided with the opportunity to improvise over a Bb Blues progression with a recorded rhythm section accompaniment.  (Note: Students are strongly encouraged to improvise, and the scores for improvisation will be part of the overall score, and will help determine chairs in the Jazz band.)

Bass Guitar: 

Students will be asked to play three scales: the chromatic scale, and two major scales.  For ranges, etc., see the District 1 Scale guide guide here. (Same requirement as D1 Concert Band, note the addition to all 12 major scales, and scale sheets can be used in the audition). 

Students will play the bass line etude (for Fall of 2013 it will be “Autumn Leaves”). A practice track can be found here(Note:  Same as All State Jazz comping etude. Also, students do not need to prepare the District 1 etude #1.) 

Students will play the District 1 etude #2- bass clef. 

Students will be responsible to prepare the appropriate rhythm section "style sheet‟. 

Students will sight read. 

Students will be provided with the opportunity to improvise over a Bb Blues progression with a recorded rhythm section accompaniment.  (Note: Students are strongly encouraged to improvise, and the scores for improvisation will be part of the overall score, and will help determine chairs in the Jazz band.)

Note:  Students have recorded accompaniment with the "comping etude" and the blues improvisation. 


Drums: 

Students will play along with a recording of instruments playing the jazz all-state audition piece (for Fall of 2013 it will be “Autumn Leaves”), play the drum comping etude, then trade four's with the recording. A practice track can be found here.(Note: Same as All State Jazz audition)

Students will be responsible to prepare the appropriate rhythm section "style sheet- drums‟. 

Students will sight read.
