Beware Ronny`s rockets

Aston Villa may be renowned for their success from set-pieces, but John O'Shea says they had better watch out for Cristiano Ronaldo’s near-perfect free-kicks.

“He spends a lot of time working on his free-kicks after training,” O’Shea told 1413AM Manchester United Radio ahead of the game.

“But it’s not as if he needs to work too much more on them. He’s got to the point where he’s consistently hitting the target and the swerve he generates means goalkeepers don’t know which way it’s going.

"We’ve seen keepers just hold their hands up and admit defeat because they don’t know how to deal with them. Maybe we’ll see teams employ some new tactics in order to try and stop him. We might see a team form a wall and also put a player on the line. At the moment, a wall on its own just isn’t enough!”

Whether Aston Villa will heed O’Shea’s advice when they visit Old Trafford on Saturday remains to be seen. We do know, however, that the Midlands outfit are more than capable of producing some big results. Martin O’Neill’s men have taken four points off Chelsea this season and were seconds away from beating Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium recently.

“I’m not surprised Villa have taken points off those teams,” O’Shea said. “They have a good mixture of power and pace and they’ve managed to steer clear of injuries.

"Martin Laursen has scored a lot of headed goals from set pieces, so we know they’ve worked a lot on their delivery from corners and free kicks. Just like Cristiano, they’ve reaped the rewards from a lot of hard work on the training ground.”

Sheasy targets maximum points

Top-of-the-league United are aiming for maximum points until the end of the season.

Republic of Ireland international John O’Shea says confidence in the Reds’ camp is sky-high ahead of Portsmouth’s visit to Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

“I’m sure there will be plenty of twists and turns before the end of the season but we’re definitely capable of winning all our matches,” 26-year-old O’Shea told Manchester United Radio.

“I’m not saying we will do that – we have to treat each match as it comes – but everyone’s really positive at the moment. The manager’s happy as well!”

Portsmouth arrive in Manchester with five players away on African Nations Cup duty, although Harry Redknapp boosted his squad on Monday with the loan signing of Lyon’s Milan Baros.

“Harry’s brought in one or two new players and Portsmouth will be intent on finishing strongly this season,” O’Shea said.

“It’s been a small surprise how well they’ve done this season, particularly away from home. You come across one or two teams who struggle away from home but the opposite applies to Portsmouth.

“We’ll have to be on our toes but I think our home form is good and we’re scoring plenty of goals. We’re positive going into the match. It’s all guns blazing right now.”

I have no problem with being away at Christmas

United's players will perfect their passing on Christmas Day in the interests of picking up three points in the Barclays Premier League on Boxing Day.

The O'Shea and Rooney families, for example, can expect John and Wayne to pass when offered extra potatoes or another portion of pudding. Over-indulgence is off the agenda when there's a big match to play at Sunderland 24 hours later.

John told MUTV: "You can have a small bit of Christmas dinner but not too much!

"The manager makes sure the players look after themselves and prepare for the Boxing Day match in a professional manner. So we can’t enjoy Christmas Day perhaps as much as other people but that’s a small price to pay for playing at a club like United."

Wayne agrees: "You couldn’t have as big a portion as everybody else but apart from that, it's still a normal Christmas dinner with your family.

"Then you have to leave for the hotel. I imagine that's harder for the older players with kids. But at the moment it’s fine for me personally - I’m just going out to play football which I love doing so I’ve no problem with being away at Christmas."

Sheasy in derby game

Johnny took a part in United`s derby win against Everton. He substituted Danny Simpson in 45th minute and played well the whole 2nd half. United took a lead in 22nd minute after Ronaldo`s wonder strike but only 5 minutes later Everton`s Cahill scored a header. It looked like United will only won 1 point but after Pienaar`s challenge inside the box, referee Howard Webb had no choice but to point to the spot. Ronaldo sent Everton`s goalie Howard the wrong way and United took all 3 points and well deserved win.

Old quotes from O`Shea

I found an old interview with Sheashy, talking about Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo ( his United team-mates ).

John O'Shea has rubbished reports of unrest at Old Trafford following the World Cup histrionics involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

Much has been made of the spat between the pair following Ronaldo's involvement in the red card Rooney received for England against Portugal in the World Cup quarter final.

At one stage in a summer of unrest it looked as though Ronaldo may have played his last game for United as Real Madrid hovered but it has now been confirmed that the precocious wide man will remain in England.

With the opening Premiership games less than a week away, O'Shea has laughed off reports of a dispute in the camp and, on the contrary, has spoken of a united front.

"There have been no problems between Wayne and Ronaldo," O'Shea told Sky Sports News.

"It's actually been quite funny at times the circus that has gone on.

"Obviously, they weren't team-mates at the time, they were trying to do their best for their countries.

"But they're back now, they're team-mates again and they are looking forward to the season starting.

"Look at the way he (Ronaldo) has come back into training, and with some of the goals he has scored already in pre-season.

"It's just been fantastic to see him back in action and I feel he is going to be a big player for us this season, a major threat.

"I know he has been vilified, but so have other players over the years. The club are used to dealing with it.

"He has had so much pressure on him anyway since he came to the club because of the price the club paid for him.

"But he showed at the World Cup what a talent he is, and he should have won the Young Player award."

O'Shea is currently with the Republic of Ireland squad as they prepare for a midweek friendly against Holland who, to the midfielder's surprise, have omitted his former United team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The prolific Dutchman has endured a miserable last few months as he was first shown the exit door at Old Trafford, and then dropped by Holland, but while O'Shea is quick to praise the striker, he insists a replacement can be found.

''I had been hoping to meet up with Ruud again. I was sad to see him go, not just because of his talent and the goals he scored, but as a friend too,'' he concluded.

"As the manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] always says, though, the club move on, and we've brought in Michael Carrick who is going to be a great addition to our squad.

"Look at other players who have left the club, like [Eric] Cantona and [Roy] Keane.

"People said they were irreplaceable, but different players come in and add their qualities to the team.

"You have to move forward because if you keep looking back then you would be into the season and you could lose a few points."

United are the team for me!

John O'Shea didn't need asking twice when the club approached him with a contract extension that will keep the Irishman at Old Trafford until 2012.

Although O'Shea, 26, has appeared more often as a substitute than in Sir Alex's starting XI this season, he was never tempted to seek regular football elsewhere and committed his future to the Reds on 23 November.

"The club approached me [about a contract extension] just after the start of the season," O'Shea told Manchester United Radio. "It didn't take long for me to say yes. It's a fantastic place to be, I've enjoyed the success we've had and I want to be involved in more of that in the future."

Top of the list, he says, is success in Europe. O'Shea's currently involved in his seventh Champions League campaign and has already appeared in both the Reds' midfield and the back four this season.

"The versatility tag always comes up when people talk about me but being versatile may have helped me play more games for United, so I'm grateful for that. Being part of Manchester United is all about working hard and if you do that then you get the rewards. Hard work is appreciated at this club and I'm looking forward to challenging for more trophies."

O`Shea took a part in EPL game against Bolton

John came in as a substitute for Wesley Brown in 89th minute. Althought he did a good job it wasn`t enough for Man United to take any points from the Reebook Stadium. After Anelka`s goal in 11th minute, United couldn`t control the game and were unable to score.

United`s next game is against Sporting Lisbon at Old Trafford. It`s not an important game because United already qualified for CL 2nd round.

O`Shea signs new deal

John O’Shea has signed a three-year extension to his current contract, which will see him stay at Old Trafford until June 2012.

The versatile Irishman made his United debut eight years ago as an 18-year-old and has been a regular first-team squad member since his breakthrough season, the title-winning campaign of 2002/03.

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to the 26-year-old, saying: “John has developed during his time here at the club and he is now regarded as one of the more experienced players.

"He has proved over the years through his personality and professionalism that he is an outstanding credit to Manchester United. I'm delighted he has signed a new contract."

O’Shea was equally upbeat after putting pen to paper, adding: “I'm really pleased to be extending my contract with the champions. I've been at Old Trafford since I was 17 and it's a dream come true to play for such a great club.

"I hope to play my part in bringing more trophies to the club and to continue the success with this young, exciting team. I'd also like to thank the boss, the staff and the fans for their continued support.”

O'Shea: Sir Alex is still hungry

John O'Shea was just five years old when Sir Alex Ferguson joined United in 1986 and, amid another assault on the Champions League, the versatile Irishman admits he is amazed by his manager's longevity.

Sir Alex celebrated 21 years in charge of the Reds this week but, according to O'Shea, his appetite for success is, if anything, becoming more insatiable with time.

"It's an amazing achievement to sustain such a hunger and a desire to be the best," O'Shea told Tuesday's pre-match press conference for the Reds' Champions League clash with Dynamo Kyiv.

"He's tried to put it through to his players every year and with every squad he has built and every team.

"It's got stronger and stronger from what I've witnessed and that's a credit to his achievement and his team's success, and that's what he wants to continue."

Sir Alex's latest challenge is to overcome the latest addition to the Champions League's managerial ranks, as Oleg Luzhny leads Kyiv into battle at Old Trafford.

Despite his daunting bow, the former Arsenal defender admits he would love to emulate his opposite number this evening. "I think the aim of every coach is to achieve the same result as Sir Alex," he admitted.

Sheasy took a part in United`s Premier League game against rivals Arsenal.  He substituted Wesley Brown in 71st minute. United scored 10 minutes before the end of the game, but it wasn`t enough for win. Arsenal`s Gallas scored in injury time for the final result 2-2.
