Maclay Northside Dolphins has a program for every level swimmer-- beginner to state/ national ranked and everything in between.
High School swimmers: If you just want a low pressure program to get get ready for High School season, you can do that; we have a limited HS conditioning program. But if you want to be your best and take advantage of everything we have available, you can do that too; you'll want to swim with the experienced swimmers..
Experienced Swimmers (swum previously with a competitive team): We have practice prgrams of up to 9 practices per week in the summer and 7 per week in the school year.
Beginners: Maclay Northside Dolphins accommodates all swimmers who can swim the length of the Maclay pool (25 meters, not your typical home pool) and breathe to the side relatively easily. If your child can make the length but has trouble with the breathing, lessons first is the best strategy.
Seven and a half is usually the appropriate age to start a child in a competitive sport. Before that, most children do not appreciate the structure of swim practice nor the idea of competition. For the few that are particularly competitive at an early age, we make exceptions. That is, for children who are particularly competitive, not for parents who want their children to be competitive early.
If you are new to competitive swimming, it is best to start at one of our designated start times, when many others will be starting with you and coaches are prepared to gear the workouts to new swimmers. Those designated start times are at the beginning of the fall season, the beginning of the spring season, and the beginning of the summer season. See our practice schedule to figure when the next start time is.
For older children or swimmers with previous competitive experience, you will wish to view the practice groups. Once past the beginner level, each swimmer gets to choose his/her level of involvement. For those not very serious, there is the recreational track and for those very serious, there is the committed track (click here for details). Swimmers may switch tracks at almost any time. Obviously those with highest goals will want to chose the committed track and parents need to be aware of the demands of this track. (Swimming is not like some of the sports you may have tried with practice only once or twice per week.)
Prospective swimmers are allowed to try the program for one week for $20 without further commitment. By the end of that week, we need a decision and if it is to continue, the USA registration needs to be in that Friday. The $20 already paid will be credited toward your coaching fees. The remainder of the registration papers may be completed by the following Monday. USA registration and team registration forms are provided in the section labeled current session info.
