"It's DECA for trees!"
Envirothon is a competitive club that Mackenzie has been running since 2006. Each year, the school sends three teams consisting of five students from any grade to participate in this team based competition. Participants are given the opportunity to explore and learn about five aspects of the natural world (Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, Aquatics, and the case- study based Human-Environment Interactions) and apply this learning in a competition setting, which includes both field/written tests and presentations. Aside from general environmental knowledge, the competition is also tailored to help participants develop critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
Participants are granted access to the program's annual workshops and competitions at the regional, provincial and international levels. Scholarships, awards and certificates are given out to those who perform exceptionally well at the competitions. The competition takes place annually, between April and May.
To participate on Mackenzie's Envirothon team, attend an informational meeting in the fall. The meeting will outline the application process. Because the competition includes a heavily weighted oral component, we will also use an oral presentation in our applications.
