The Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg Fund

Lynchburg College receives support from Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg

The Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg has established a fund to support Lynchburg College’s environmental science programs with an emphasis placed on activities aligned with the league’s mission and properties.

The group presented a $2,500 check to LC President Kenneth Garren  during a signing ceremony on Jan. 28, 2015. The Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg plans to donate $2,500 annually for five years to this fund for a total of $12,500. Each year, $600 will go toward current programming and $1,900+ will go into the endowed fund until the fund reaches $6,000 at which point it will yield an annual income that can be used for programming.

The Environmental Science and Environmental Studies faculty of the College, in consultation with the dean of the School of Sciences, will have the authority to determine the use of the annual income from The Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg Fund.

Dr. Tom Shahady, professor of environmental science, already has ideas for initial work on the ponds at Izaak Walton Park property this semester. He plans to have students sample the refilled pond to assess the fisheries population. He also plans to incorporate the drained pond as part of his wetlands course.  The class will delineate the wetlands, identify plants, produce a report and hypothesize wetland mitigation bank credits.

New Park Sign

posted Jan 24, 2015, 8:45 PM by IWLA Lynchburg   [ updated Jan 24, 2015, 8:47 PM ]

Despite some freezing temperatures this month, several hardy volunteers and our Park Superintendent have been busy installing our new Izaak Walton Park sign this past three weekends. But for some landscaping, which will have to wait for spring time, the installation is complete.

The need for the new sign was made apparent to us during our open house last summer when some of our neighbors on Izaak Walton Road told us that they have lived there for twenty years or more and did not even know that Izaak Walton Park even existed.

The new sign required a zoning variance from Amherst county which the County Board of Supervisors graciously granted with a unanimous vote of the board.

Lower Pond Fish Stocking

posted Sep 7, 2014, 4:41 PM by IWLA Lynchburg   [ updated Sep 7, 2014, 4:42 PM ]

Friday last, September 5th, the Park received a shipment of
fish for stocking the lower pond. The transport truck from the Carolina Fish Hatchery, with its oxygenated fish tanks, arrived just after sunset. We released into the pond about:

1. 1400 + Bluegill Fingerlings
2. 600 + Redear (Shellcracker) Fingerlings
3. 45 Channel Catfish (5 to 6 inch size)
4. 50 Channel Catfish Fingerlings

The mortality rate appeared to be about 1.5%

The Bluegill and the Redear are forage fish for the Large Mouth Bass that will be released into the pond in February . We will be installing some habitats for the Catfish in late September or early                                                                     October.
