Liverpool : The Walker Gallery and the Two Cathedrals

On arrival in Liverpool we will be met by Elizabeth Newell, who is a Blue Badge Guide for Merseyside as well as a NADFAS lecturer. She will be our guide on our visits to both Cathedrals in the morning doing a tour (by coach) around the Georgian Quarter in between. The Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral houses one of the city’s greatest architectural gems, the Lutyens’ Crypt, while the Anglican Cathedral is Britain’s largest cathedral and boasts the world’s highest and widest gothic arches, After lunch we will proceed to the Walker Art Gallery where we will enjoy a talk and guided tour by one of the museum guides. The impressive collection includes beautiful paintings, sculpture and decorative art from the 13th century to the present day. There will be free time in all the venues to explore them independently.

Saltaire and Salt’s Mill

We will enjoy a guided walk round Saltaire village, a UNESCO World Heritage site located on the outskirts of Bradford, West Yorkshire and named after Sir Titus Salt. It was a purpose built village to house workers for his new textile mill, by the side of the River Aire, perhaps the finest example of Italianate architecture in England. Today, Salt’s Mill houses the art work of David Hockney, a Bradford born artist, and sells an interesting and eclectic collection of books, furniture, jewellery, clothing, home effects and good food. After the walking tour we will be free to have lunch and explore Salt’s Mill at our leisure and enjoy the latest David Hockney stunning exhibition, 'The Arrival of Spring’, on the third floor...

We also hope to include a talk and short concert in the fabulous Victoria Hall, home to Yorkshire's finest Wurlizter cinema organ, while enjoying tea and cakes.
