New Option: SL in One Year

This course is now offered as Standard Level (one year) or Higher Level (two years). Everyone will be in the same class for Year 1. HL will continue with their extensions and additional material in Year 2. Below is a brief overview of the differences. A PDF is also available.
SL (HL Year 1) Course Outline
  • 3 Core Approaches to Understanding Behavior:
    • Biological
    • Cognitive
    • Sociocultural
  • 1 Option: Developmental Psychology

SL Assessment

Internal assessment - 25% weighting

  • Experimental study
    A report on an experimental study undertaken by the student
External Assessment - 75% weighting
  • Paper 1 (2 hours, taken May, Year 1) - 50% weighting
    • Section A: Three short-answer questions on the core approaches to psychology
    • Section B: One essay from a choice of three on the biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches to behavior
  • Paper 2 (1 hour, taken May, Year 1) - 25% weighting
    One question from a choice of three on one option
HL (Year 2) Course Outline
  • 3 Core Approaches to Understanding Behavior extensions:
    • the role of animal research in understanding human behavior
    • cognitive processing in the digital world
    • the influence of globalization on individual attitudes, identities and behaviour
  • 1 More Option: Health/Abnormal Psychology

HL Assessment

Internal assessment - 20% weighting
  • Experimental study
    A report on an experimental study undertaken by the student
External Assessment - 80% weighting
  • Paper 1 (2 hours, taken May, Year 2) - 40% weighting
    • Section A: Three short-answer questions on the core approaches to psychology
    • Section B: One essay from a choice of three on the biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches to behavior. One, two or all of the essays will reference the additional HL topic
  • Paper 2 (2 hours, taken May, Year 2) - 20% weighting
    Two questions; one from a choice of three on each of two options
  • Paper 3 (1 hour, taken May, Year 2) - 20% weighting
    Three short-answer questions from a list of six static questions on approaches to research
