pick up 3 stitches from along side of upper body
Row 1 - knit
Row 2 - purl
Row 3 - k1, yo, repeat to end
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have 33 stitches (note: last row will end in Knit 1)
Bind off in knit.
Do the same for the other side.
Curve wing around and sew/weave to body.

As far as attaching the wings to the body.  I pick up the 3 stitches alongside the body, and start the wing.  Once the wing is done, and you curve it, you can anchor/attach it in it's place to stay put using a quick stitch or you could even get out a needle and thread and sew it.
