Parent Involvement Plan

2014-2015

Mission Statement:

The mission of Louis Wiener, Jr. Elementary School, in cooperation with students, parents, and the community, is dedicated to the development of individual strengths, talents, and the assurance of academic excellence for all students in a positive, caring, and supportive environment.

Parent Involvement Policy:

This policy has been jointly developed and agreed upon by the staff of Louis Wiener, Jr. Elementary School and parents of our students pursuant to Title I.

Louis Wiener, Jr. Elementary School will convene an annual meeting, at a convenient time for parents, to evaluate this policy. This meeting will be held during the morning and afternoon of September 19, 2014.

The School’s Parent Involvement Policy, developed by staff and parents, will be distributed in an understandable and uniform format and to the extent practicable, in a language parents can understand.  The parent involvement policy will also be made available to the community.

Louis Wiener, Jr. Elementary School will involve parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way in the planning, review, and improvement of Title I programs, school improvement plan and parent involvement policy.  The school will offer bi-monthly parent forums for parents/guardians to participate in and attend.

The Educational Involvement Accords will be sent home the first day each child attends in the school year.  Additional copies will be sent home to students who have not returned a signed copy of the Accord.  For parents new to the school, the Accords will be included in the initial registration packet.

Building Capacity:

Louis Wiener, Jr. Elementary School, in order to build the school’s capacity for strong performance will:

·        Provide our parents with a copy of Partners for Achievement each trimester to assist parents in understanding the Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS).  This information will also be available on our website.

·        Provide our parents with ongoing, current data that shows their child’s academic progress towards each standard of the Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS).

·        Provide our parents with training on both Standards Based Assessments, Standard based Report Cards,  School Performance Framework, and Growth Model

·        Train our parents to monitor their child’s progress through progress reports that will be sent home every three weeks and nightly homework.  Progress Reports will clearly state which level their child is performing for each standard being taught and assessed.  Parent evaluations and suggestion sheets are completed at each parent activity held at the school.  Evaluations and suggestions are used to develop topics and provide needed resources for future meetings.

·        Provide our parents with strategies on how to work with our staff to enhance their child’s education experience, through volunteering in the school, communicating with their child’s teacher, and through working with their child at home.  Volunteer pamphlets have been created, as well as, a checklist for parents to choose a variety of activities that they feel comfortable with.  Training for various tasks will be provided by members of the staff.

Family Nights will be held throughout the year; focusing on all academic areas.  Information, as well as, hands-on activities will be provided to the parents so that they may work with their child at home.

The administration will, with the assistance of parents, encourage teachers to foster parent involvement and improve staff/parent communication in an effort to create an equal partnership.

Community Resources:

Louis Wiener, Jr. Elementary School, to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinates, and integrates parent involvement programs and activities with various community resources.

The Louis Wiener, Jr. PTA provides free and low cost activities fostering community involvement.

The Community Based Preschool and KIDS programs provide trainings and activities for students and parents one Friday each month.

The school community partners this year include St. Rose San Martin, Applebee’s, Target, and Horace Mann.

Louis Wiener, Jr. Elementary is working with Safe Nest to help students in grades 1, 3, and 5 to learn about and deal with anger management issues.  The school has scheduled times for the Child Assault Prevention Program to teach the students in grades 1, 2, and 4 to learn about staying safe and reporting dangers.

Teachers are provided with Bullying activities and supplies at the beginning of the year.  Students in grades 1 through 5 will attend Doc Dixon Assemblies to learn about bullying and what to do when they or someone they know is being bullied.

Through classroom counseling lessons, the students have learned about Kelso’s choices and how to work together.

The teachers and staff recognize “Bucket Fillers”, those students that do things to help build each other up through help and encouragement.

The school is actively involved in the Josh Stevens’ Foundation by creating a “Be Kind” atmosphere, and publicly recognizes students who have gone above and beyond to help one another during the monthly citizenship assemblies.
