Humanitarian and Volunteer

Mayor Louie A. Lujan, City of La Puente

Louie joined thousands of volunteers as he worked with New Orleans Habitat and former U.S. President and First Lady Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter to Blitz Build seven homes, frame and dry-in 20 homes and dedicate 25 more during May, 2008.

Louie joined thousands of volunteers that have assisted in the rebuilding of homes in the Gulf Coast Region of the United States since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the area in August and September of 2005. Tens of thousands of people have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and more than 1,300 houses have been built or are under construction.  Louie encourages you to become a volunteer; click here for more information.

Louie has also dedicated his time locally as a volunteer for The Wonder of Reading; a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to inspire in children the love of reading.  Their mission is to have a significant impact on reading in Southern California elementary schools.  Louie assisted in the effort to renovate libraries at local public elementary schools, making them more useful and more inviting to young students.  He was proud to be asked to cut the ribbon at two newly renovated libraries in Rowland Unified School District as they expanded library space to include story steps for group reading, individual work stations for tutoring, and a cove for quiet reading.
