Star Theatre

145 N. 1st St.    | map |

La Puente, CA   91744

The News: There's now a Star Theatre page on Facebook. And a Save the Star page.

Opened: 1947

Architect:  S. Charles Lee designed the building using semicircular wood trusses as the structure.  It's indexed in the UCLA S. Charles Lee Papers as the Puente Theatre but this evidently was just a working name for the project during construction.

Seating: 599

It became a porno venue in 1978.  In 2001 it got a makeover and started running first run family films with Mexican subtitles along with live performances.

Status: Closed 2007. It's currently vacant with an unknown future.

It was scheduled for demolition to make way for a now dead mixed use retail and residential project.  Wikimapia has a listing for the now-dead project.

More information: See the Cinema Treasures page on the Star for the whole story.  The page also has links to a number of 2008 exterior photos by Ken McIntyre.

Cinema Tour has eleven 2006 photos from the Bob Meza collection.  Wikipedia has a photo.  The City of La Puente has a 50s view on their website.
