I am a mixed media artist. I am also a poet, short fiction writer, and playwright. My collection of poems, Bread upon the Waters, was published in 2001 by Michigan State University Press and is available through Amazon.com.
I paint abstracts: imaginative pieces which relate to nature. I also paint non-representational pieces which come from my heart and mind without references to the external world. I love color, especially blues.
The painting below was chosen for the cover of Pearls of Discrete Mathematics, Martin Erickson, CRC Press, 2009 which has world-wide distribution and acclaim.
Wild Vines Among the Blues, original, mixed media on canvas, 20x16, framed, $250. This painting has hand-worked embroidery and beadwork.--SOLD
Spring Jazz, original, mixed media on canvas, 20x16, framed; $150
This is a happy painting, fulll of bounce and swing. The colors remind me of early spring, and the brush strokes remind me of jazz notes, blown in sweet sounds.
Spacescape VII--random order, original, acrylic on canvas, 24x18, framed, $275. Sold.
For several years I have been creating spacescapes, imaginary scapes which are neither here nor elsewhere. If I had to categorize my work with these spacescapes, I would refer to renowned artist, Hans Hofmann, who coined the phrase push-pull, meaning creating a tension betwen the various depths in a painting, pushing and pulling the eye back and forth through the picture plane. Notice the hypercube which pulls our eyes back and forth through boxes and stars.
Hypercube Quilt, original, acrylic, embroidery, beads on canvas, 20x16, framed. NA

Falling Sun, original, mixed media on canvas, 16x20, framed, $175
Waterscape I, original, mixed media on canvas, 16x20, framed, $150--SOLD
I use whatever materials my imagination and my hands can find: watermedia such as acrylics, inks, watercolors, of course, but also sand, paint skins, collage (rarely). I use spatulas, rollers, palette knives, hair picks, plastic forks, cardboard...to create vitality in colors and textures. I delight in layering the paints, scraping them back to reveal under colors, lifting colors, letting colors run happily into each other. I frequently mix my colors directly on canvas or paper rather than use a palette board. My first application of colors in an abstract or non-representational painting, however, is only the beginning. I work and work and work again until I am happy with what I have created.
My paintings reflect tensions between movement and stillness. I make connections among reality, memory, and imagination.
My paintings have been included in juried shows in Sarasota, Bradenton and Tampa FL and in Ann Arbor MI.
