The Lord Jesus Christ is the Eternal I AM
One of the most powerful statements spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ is recorded in John 8:58. He said: “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was I AM.” When He said that He existed before Abraham was born, Jesus proclaimed He is the Eternal God. Not only that, He also applied God’s holy name ‘I AM’ to Himself.
God reveals His essence and character through His Divine Name “I AM WHO I AM” in Hebrew YHWH is YAHWEH (Ex. 3:13-15).
1. God is unique - YAHWEH exists by Himself. “And there is no other God besides Me, A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me.” (Isa. 45:21)
2. God is eternal - He exists all the time. “This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.” (Ex. 3:15)
3. God manifested Himself in the flesh and shares the same name ‘I AM’ – YAH with His Son Jesus Christ, (Isa. 12:2; Jn. 5:43; 8:58).
Presently the Jews do not pronounce God’s name YHWH for fear of breaking the Third Commandment. In the synagogues whenever they see the name YHWH in their Bibles they substitute and read it as Adonai that means LORD. Most English Bibles follow the Jewish tradition of printing the word LORD (in capital letters) instead of YHWH.
The Lord Jesus Christ is
God manifested in the flesh
John 1:1-2, 14
1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
The Lord Jesus Christ
proclaims Himself to be God
30 “I and My Father are one.’
31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.
32 Jesus answered them, ‘Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?’
33 The Jews answered Him, saying, ‘For a good work we do not stone You, but for blaspheme, and because You, being a Man, make yourself God.”
The Lord Jesus Christ proclaims
Himself to be the Eternal I AM
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad
57 Then the Jews said to Him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?’
58 “Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’
59 Then they took up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.”
The Lord Jesus Christ is the Eternal I AM
Exodus 3:14 (New King James Version)
“And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children, ‘I AM has sent me to you.”
Exodus 3:14 (in the Hebrew Text Bible)
In the Old Testament of the Septuagint (LXX) Bible the name ‘I AM’ is translated into Greek as ‘Ego Eimi’ which is the holy name of God.
John 8:58 (in the Greek Text Bible)
It is highly significant that in John 8:58 of the New Testament the Lord Jesus Christ spoke these same words ‘I AM’ which are translated into Greek as ‘Ego Eimi’. The Jews then took up stones to throw at Him because He was applying God’s holy name to Himself.
Jesus Christ expresses Divinity
and Humanity in I AM
The Lord Jesus Christ said ‘I AM’ – ‘Ego Eimi’ as God and as Man several times in the Gospel of John and in Revelation.
I AM the Way
The Lord Jesus Christ said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (Jn. 14:6) The Lord Jesus Christ not only came to show us the way to the heavenly Father, He is the only way to reach Him. “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.” (Eph. 2:18)
I AM the Truth
The Lord Jesus Christ is the God of truth (Psm. 31:5; Isa. 65:16). “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (Jn. 1:14)
I AM the Life
The Lord Jesus Christ is the source of all life. “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” (Jn. 1:3-4)
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but passed from death into life.” (Jn. 5:24)
I AM the Bread of Life
“I am the living bread which comes down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” (Jn. 6:51)
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” (Jn. 6:63)
I AM the Resurrection
“Jesus said to her, ‘ I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me , though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (Jn. 11:25-26)
I AM the Light of the World
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (Jn. 8:12)
“While you have the light , believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” (Jn. 12:36)
I AM the Door of the Sheep
“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. (Jn. 10:9)
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (Jn. 10:10)
I AM the Good Shepherd
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” (Jn. 10:11)
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” (Jn. 10:27-28)
I AM the True Vine
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit;” (Jn. 15:5)
“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” (Jn. 15:8)
I AM the First and the Last
“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” (Rev. 22:12-13)
