Combating Anti-Semitism Committee
The inaugural meeting of the Combating Anti-Semitism Committee was held on  December 16, 2018 at the Lodzer.
Jeff Shabes led off the meeting by suggesting topics for a Lodzer Centre program that would include speakers from all levels of government, survivors of the Holocaust and people who have experienced some form of bigotry. He also suggested we get media coverage from outlets such as CP24, the Sun and City News.
He noted that he tried to get in touch with other synagogues for an educational outreach program in the area to see if they would join us in a group program but to no avail.
Others in the group said we need to have a clear message that we want to send to the general community before embarking on any specific programs.
Other suggestions included:
•    Talking to a film director who has gone out to schools with a film on the Holocaust and the importance of visuals in getting children to learn.
•    Getting different groups such as CIJA, CIJR, Bnai Brith, Jewish Defence League and a Holocaust Education group to come talk to the committee first to tell us what they are doing in the community and how we may be able to glean some ideas from them.
•    Others suggested that those interested in combating anti-Semitism simply join with one of the above-named groups, all of which have a wider audience than the Lodzer.
•    One person suggested that a self-defence course be taught in tandem with the outreach plan.
RESULT: One of the committee members will get in touch with a member of one of the above groups for a meeting to be held on February 24.
Next meeting: Sunday, February 24 at 10;00 AM
All are welcome.
