Public Parks and Recreation Special Needs Division

“The Special Programs/Inclusion unit provides many programs designed to meet the needs of citizens with disabilities.” Special Olympics is housed with the Parks and Recreation Department. “These programs are tailored for participants based on their disability. We also make accommodations within other DPR programs for persons with special needs.” Sports, Summer Camps, Leisure Activities.

Barriskill Dance Studio

"This class is for children who have cognitive deficits. All children crave movement and these kids are no exception. Many children who have trouble expressing themselves verbally find they can express themselves physically. This can be enlightening and joyful. While the kids are having fun jumping and twirling, they are also building self esteem, creatively solving problems, forming social relationships with peers, and improving their motor skills. This class is designed to meet the needs of special children, so it is flexible and responsive to the developmental level of each child." One class for 5-8 year olds and one class for 8-12 year olds.
