Embedding External Tools in the vLE



NOTICE: After August 2013, modern browsers have been blocking some embedded tools that are not https. (notice the “s”). This can be fixed in some embedded tools by manually adding an “s” behind the http in the embed code. Otherwise, users will have to click the shield icon in the URL bar to give the browser permission to display the embedded tools.


Google Maps and Google Earth

Why

- provides access to dynamic maps and satellite imagery of the earth’s surface

- teachers and students use all the functions (Zoom, Pan, Distance/Measure) of a Google map, within a document in the LMS

- applicable in Social Sciences, Geography and History

- can also be used for class field trips, providing directions to parents/guardians with predefined map routes

How

- center map where desired or defined map direction, click link button beside the print button, embed Code provided, with link to the predefined map. (Only with classic Google maps).


YouTube

Why

- provide short videos for students to watch in the LMS.

- provide students access to videos watched in class (blended)

- can be curriculum related or general human-interest videos to increase the student level of enjoyment of the LMS.

- applicable to all subject areas.

- can be inserted through the LMS youtube embed tool which needs to be turned on in Roles and Permissions.

How

- Embed Code available under the video, click share, embed, copy code, insert in HTML area of post or content document.

- there are options to start the video at a specified time.

- you can turn off suggestions at the end of the video before copying the embed code.


National Film Board of Canada

Why

- provide access to films for students to view.

- click ‘embed’ under the video, get embed code.


Mural.ly

Why

- Provides a virtual mural, for users to share and collaborate on

- It is an online Whiteboard designed to visually organize ideas and to allow collaboration on ideas

- Excellent for group projects, visual art classes, social studies and other subject areas.

- can be used in any subject area at all grade levels

Why

- collaborate and share virtually anything on the web or on your computer, by pasting things on a virtual wall

Why

How

- open album, click edit under your account name and beside your avatar, change settings to public, save changes. “Link to this album” option now available lower right side. Copy embed code.

- look and feel can be customized with a variety of backgrounds and other choices

How

- choose your location (city), set your preferences (metric, imperial) and create the sticker

- embed code (<iframe>)is not provided, rather you must copy and paste the sticker location; very similar to embed


WordPress

Why

- alternative method to providing regular news postings to students in your course homepage. - news items can be posted from blogger using a gmail account.

- news items can be posted from a smartphone with an app.

- pictures can be posted from mobile devices.
