You should now be in a position to see a range of interesting things about this encounter.
Notice what occasions the sellers response 'oh bless you'. Having made a 'pitch', the passer-by walks directly towards the seller and then looks in her bag. That is enough for the seller to 'see' that a sale is forthcoming. He does not orient to her as someone who is about to remove a phone, hair brush or map. From his response, she is looking for her purse, to extract money to buy a magazine. The seller moves a single copy of the magazine from the top of the pile. He is preparing for a sale.
The 'donor' has to confront the fact that her activities are accountable as those of someone wishing to buy a magazine. How does she do this? She simply says 'I don't want the magazine'. This reveals her appreciation of how she is seen.
The seller responds by saying 'fine'. This itself is super interesting. As a further little exercise, say 'it's fine' like you mean it, and then like you don't. In this case, the vendor say s'it's fine' like he means it, regardless of whether he feels personally wounded. He makes it clear the 'donors' decision is 'absolutely fine', not a problem at all.
The donor does not leave it at that. She orients to the act of 'giving' as something that needs a verbal account. The account she produces is neat, because it locates the reason for 'giving not buying' the magazine in the conditions of her own life. She has lots to read, by warrant of being a Catholic.
This backfires a little. Social problems arise with the introduction of religious considerations. The vendor say 'whoa, whatever'. She is giving 'too much information'.
This is all it takes to get started. It's really not that difficult. There is a nice methodological distinction between 'giving' and 'buying' that is demonstrably oriented to by the participants. Navigating this distinction people confront practical, economic, and normative problems that you can start to recover and understand. People navigate the distinction without saying anything, using their body to reveal they are giving not buying, or they might find themselves having to explain their actions, with all the pitfalls associated with that.
