Making Open Media work better

Making open media work better

Who we are
Hamish Campbell and Richard Hering are award-winning documentary makers and founders of visionOntv. Recently, Hamish's footage from the Genoa protests of 2001 convicted 69 Italian police of human rights abuses. Richard's film for Channel 4's Dispatches ended the illegal mahogany trade out of Brazil.
We are now dedicated to working out how to make the web a more robust place for independent voices (a recent takedown of site at the behest of the Metropolitan police meant that a series of our films about civil rights abuses were made inaccessible).

Our topic
For this to happen, independent media projects need to improve the way rss works. "Really Simple Syndication" needs to become "Really Simple Aggregation", a network of linked open media. We are building an exemplar node in this network in the java-based liferay cms. To do this we are taking media RSS02 in and out by multi-tagging, initially with video. This will mean "good" aggregation, rather than "bad", respecting and maintaining the original sources and growing valid links. In this way, independent media projects can be so much more than the sum of their parts.
