Chapter 9
The Gathering Storm, 1846-1860
[9.o.2] John Brown was the South's Worst Feat
Robert Toombs voiced southern anger at the North for its sympathy with John Brown's raid by saying, “The enemy is at your door . . .”
[9.p.4] Attempts to Prevent War
There was one last attempt at compromise in 1861. Senator John Crittenden of Kentucky sponsored six amendments, among which was one that prevented Congress from abolishing slavery in the states (a concession to the South) and restoration of the Missouri Compromise (a concession to the North). Lincoln told northern Congressmen to stand firm against this compromise as it violated the Republican promise to restrict slavery’s spread in the territories, including the area of the Wilmost Proviso below 36 degrees. This compromise attempt failed.
