No Award Group Invites Please I've been a bicyclist for as long as I can remember, and my bike of preference has always been a road bike. They are sleek, aerodynamic, lightweight, high tech, and quiet. I love clipping into the pedals and going for long rides, riding as fast as I can. But, that is the problem, the clipping into the pedals. Bike shoes are not good for walking, so if I want to go shopping or stop at a coffee shop, I have to plan ahead and bring a pair of flip flops, and maybe a pair of shorts to wear over the Lycra bike shorts. So, typically when I ride my road bike it is strictly for exercise, no stopping, just riding. Which is such a shame. We live about 2 miles from downtown, and there are so many things to see and do within a bike ride of my house. I can easily ride to the Botanic Gardens, Zoo, Aquarium, countless coffee shops, restaurants and shops. There are farmers' markets, parks, and sweet historic neighborhoods, too. So, I've been toying with the idea of getting an urban bike. Something that I can just jump on in whatever I happen to be wearing and ride to the store, coffee shop, or just around the neighborhood. After extensive research (it's my nature, I can't help it), I was convinced that an urban bike had to meet the following criteria: 1. should be purchased used and dirt cheap 2. should be ugly (so it doesn't get stolen) 3. should be one fixed gear I described what I was looking for to Charles, and he said, "let's go shopping!" And then I discovered the Electra Cruiser. The shop owner convinced me to take one out for a spin and about 2 minutes into the ride, I was a goner. I pedaled around Old South Gaylord Street past restaurants, bars, and shops with a great big smile. I felt like such a little kid! And no hand brakes! Coaster brakes...you pedal backwards to stop! When I came back from my test drive, Charles could tell I was thrilled and bought it without even asking me if I wanted it! In all the excitement, I forgot to get the wicker handlebar basket. But, I rode it home from the shop. That's right! I had on sandals and I jumped on my bike and rode through my favorite park and into the sunset. Several road bikes passed me, but I didn't feel that competitive urge to try to catch them...I just cruised home! And my criteria list? Let's see: It's brand spankin' new with a gorgeous paint job and 3 speeds! So much for research!

It's fantastic to see these young guys riding around the circuit. There's a great deal of talent and fitness amongst them and they all seem to be a fine group of supportive kids. You just have to stop for a little while during the show and marvel at the skills on show.
