TREX Recycling Challenge

Congratulations Littlebrook -- we won the TREX Recycling Challenge

Nationwide, over 550 schools like us participated in the challenge this year, making it one of the most successful drives TREX has undertaken! We competed against four other schools in New Jersey, collecting a combined total of nearly 2,000 pounds of plastics, 720 of which came from Littlebrook. Thanks to everyone who participated!

And enjoy the news coverage of our role at Planet Princeton and Princeton Patch.

The Challenge has ended, but that doesn't mean you should stop collecting these plastics!

You can continue to drop all of the listed plastics at McCaffrey's, Target, or Kohl's year-round. Just look for the "plastic bag" bins (typically located by the front doors) and keep it up!

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN STILL HELP!

1. Reduce, reuse, and RECYCLE!

2. Hang up our Handy Handout to help you keep track of it all.

3. Collect the following used plastics for TREX:

  • Ziploc and other reclosable bags
  • Produce bags
  • Grocery bags
  • Department store bags
  • Cereal bags
  • Bread bags
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Ice bags
  • Plastic overwrap (eg, around toilet paper,  napkins, bottles and more)
  • Newspaper sleeves
  • Bubble wrap and "How2Recycle" products
  • Wood pellet and salt bags
4. Bring these plastics to a drop-off location anytime:
  • Target or McCaffrey's or Kohl's (look for bins collecting "plastic bags")
*Note: LB's Terracycle collection is separate, with monthly collection dates.

Our first test "weigh-in"!

MORE RESULTS

Check out our new planter! Made form recycled lumber and plastic (like the stuff you've been bringing in!),
TREX sent it to thank us for participating in the challenge!

In the first two weeks of April we brought in 105 pounds,
bringing us to a grand total of 720 pounds!
That's about 58,000 plastic bags diverted from the landfill. WOW!

Good news:  In March, we collected 165 pounds!

And look who else we caught
bringing in some plastics!

In February we added 105 pounds
we also needed a kindie to help us compress it!

In January, we brought in a whopping 187 pounds
So glad LB Teaching Assistant, Mr. Butler,
was able to help us compress it all.

In December, we collected 117 pounds.
Good thing there was
enough room in my minivan!

LB collected 38.5 pounds of plastic in November
That's about what your average
4-year old weighs!
