Volunteer Opportunities

Every week someone walks into our office or calls LEAP to ask about learning English or getting their GED. Some want to get a job, advance their career, or to be able to talk with their child’s teacher. These motivated adults are waiting for you to call and become their tutor.

Tutors assist with more than English. They have a wealth of information about how life works here in Richmond.  They may assist students in gaining the basic skills to read and write, go shopping, engage socially, navigate the local landscape, or they may provide insight about work and work ethic.  In addition, our tutors provide the basic training for students to learn English, further their education and to obtain a GED.  Our volunteers help students achieve their goals either by working with them directly or by supporting LEAP staff.

The GED covers five subjects ( reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies).  We are seeking tutors and mentors to help students prepare for the GED test as well as Adult Basic Education and Computer Literacy. Basic knowledge on these subjects, and past tutoring experience is appreciated when inquiring about becoming a tutor with LEAP.
