Motivating Literacy Through Science in Middle School

Presenter: John Guthrie, University of Maryland,

Abstract: Motivating adolescents to learn from science text is a challenge. Students often avoid reading and devalue the text. Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) for Middle School provides: (1) relevance through videos; (2) multi-tiered texts; in (3) a conceptual theme; with (4) collaborative inquiry, and (5) continually self-directed reading. By scaffolding 8 motivations and 4 cognitive skills, this instructional frame fosters engagement and achievement in reading and writing about science.
