Constitution & Bill of Rights
How did the Bill of Rights come to be?
Watch this video, The Story of the Bill of Rights, for details about the writing of the first ten amendments.
Communication Skills - Speech preparation
Our Friday morning group is working on presentation skills. Our first presentation will be a 4-6 minute piece about yourself. Find 3 items in your life that represent who you are - some things about you that we don't already know. Talk about each item as it lets us know something about you. See the pdf below for one example. Bring the three items and your ideas to class on Friday so we may help you write your speech.
Disability Law
Our study of our rights - US Constitution & Bill of Rights - has now moved into the world of disability law. One of the most basic laws that began to move people to think about disabilities was not a law about disabilities but a basic law about education in general. This set of court cases (as usually is the case when cases go to the US Supreme Court) was about children who had to walk to another neighborhood to go to school. Watch this video about how the set of cases known as Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, came to be. Watch this second video to fill in some of the details about the cases. Now write a paragraph summarizing what you now know about this set of court cases. Use evidence from the two videos. Watch them again to be sure you understood them.
Find out more about Brown v. Board of Education by reading and exploring Landmark Cases web site.
Spreadsheets
Our learners have begun their own "how to" guide for using Google sheets. See the pdf below for the beginning piece. We'll add more next week.
