Group: Supreme Court Landmark Case #3 -- Gibson v. Ogden (1824) about interstate commerce. Review Gibson v. Ogden case. Review definition of "Commerce Power" -- includes navigation & transportation of goods across states. Review changes in commerce definition based on US v. EC Knight Company (1895) decision -- federal government can't control manufacturing process. Discuss Hammer v. Dagenhart (1918). Learn about Child Labor Act (1916). Finally, read Excerpts of the Hammer v. Dagenhart (1918) Decision. Did this case strengthen, weaken, or hold Congress's power in check? Results: We learned that Hammer v. Dagenhart (1918) was a child labor law. The law did not hold up at the Supreme Court level because the federal government, according to US vs EC Knight (1895), can't control the manufacturing of products -- only their transportation across state lines.
