Here are some of the tasks we'll be doing this week during group. Find them interesting? Then join us.
The citizenship focus this week is on The Constitution of the United States (See document attached below). Here are a few questions to ponder: What is the supreme law of the United States? How many parts does it have? What does it allow and what does it limit?
Mon 7/20 - Sentence Work: Read Act I Scene 5 of The Tragedy of MacBeth by Shakespeare for an example of a soliloquy. (A soliloquy is a character in a play speaking his thoughts aloud regardless if anyone is listening. Synonyms are monologue, lecture, public address, sermon, and aside.)
Book Group: READ pages 79-81 of Excuses Begone by Wayne Dyer. (You can find a free pdf of this book on the web.) Dyer suggests that our lives would be in alignment if we lived an excuse-free life. What does Dyer mean by alignment? What does Dyer tell us to do if our thoughts are out of alignment? Send your email responses to lac@LiteracyActionCenter.org.
Tue 7/21 - Story problem: Answer these questions: Hank is reading a 224-page book called The Underwater Welder. He has read 189 pages so far. How many pages left? What percentage has he read already? Hank has been reading this book every night for one hour for the past two weeks. How many hours has he put into this book so far? How many pages is he reading each night? How many more nights does he need before he finishes this book? (Write the equation for each question. Then, solve the equations.)
Graphs/questions: Answer the questions about the graphs of four household power bills. Today, start with question 3. (Questions and copies of the bills are in pdf files below.)
Wed 7/22 - Sentence Work: Who is Dante Alighieri? What is the poem Divine Comedy about?
Media: So far, we've learned that sending an email to a new person with a Cc to a second person is not so easy. Today, we are looking at our contact lists - learn how to edit our lists and put names into groups. Then, we'll see who can send another email with a Cc. See Directions for sending email_Jly15.pdf below for details about sending an email. See below for Add Contact in google mail account_Jly15.pdf.
Thu 7/23 - Sentence Work: Find out more about Dante's life and his poem Divine Comedy through this YouTube video. Electronics: Last week's challenge was to diagram a parallel circuit. (See our blog for pictures and story.) This week's challenge will be to create series circuits.
Fri 7/24 - Closed for Pioneer Day.
