Should you read your textbook?  For 99% of you:  absolutely
In one of his videos, Thomas explains that if you have a professor that speaks quickly 
(OKAY I KNOW.  THAT'S ME.  I'M TRYING TO GO MORE SLOWLY BUT I GET EXCITED! SORRY!)
the only way to deal with that is to prepare before class by looking at the material ahead of time.  
The BEST way to do that is to read the relevant chapters in your book.

Taking notes on paper is best, unless you already understand and know 
the material, and just want to organize it better.
