Year 6 - Miss Oakes

Dear Parents/Carers and Children of Class Oak,

A warm welcome to you all for your final year at Lindow! I hope that you have all had an amazing summer and are feeling rested and ready for a busy year ahead in Year 6. This year we will be supported in class by Mrs Phillips, Mrs Lawton and Mrs Canny.

We have an action-packed Autumn term ahead of us! During the first week, all of the children will have the opportunity to meet with their new Re

ception buddies for the first time, supporting them to settle in at Lindow and get to know where everything is. Roles in which I look forward to seeing the children thrive within. We will also be appointing many Year 6 roles and responsibilities where children will have the opportunity to be ambassadors for our school and work hard to contribute to our local community as Head Boy or Girl, as a prefect, a school councillor, as a Junior Recycling Officer, or one of the Head of Houses for Tatton, Styal, Dunham and Lyme. Within the first term, we will also have many exciting opportunities to develop our social, emotional and problem solving skills through extra-curricular activities, including the Year 6 residential to PGL at Borreatton Park, in Shropshire, Mantle of the Expert and Year 6 Bikeability.

Across this term, we will be immersing ourselves within our new topic of 'World Wars'. This will allow us to be transported back to the break out of the Second World War, when Lord Chamberlain announced Germany were taking Britain to war on 3rd September, 1939. With consideration of all members of British society including evacuees, their carers, those on the home front and the front line, the Royal family and the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, we will explore how war changed and shaped lives and left a lasting legacy upon our society today. We will also get chance to explore the art works of Henry Moore during the blitz, to be inspired by his work and create pieces to reflect the use of Anderson Shelters and the Underground for a place of protection during this time. InD & T, we will explore designing and making an item fit for purpose during the second world war with consideration of rationing and the effects of this upon daily life. This topic will also allow us to consider modern warfare and heroic individuals who have fought to make something positive and symbolic out of challenging times.

Please also see our Class DOJO page where I like to share photos of the children's learning and further updates and reminders about events upcoming at school.

Homework
All homework will be given out on a Friday and should be handed in by the following Wednesday to Miss Oakes. Children will be set weekly spelling homework (either to learn spellings from their Year 5/6 list, or to embed spelling patterns taught at school). In addition, the children will have a maths task each week and their ongoing times tables work. There is also an expectation that ALL children will be reading daily and quizzing regularly tosupport their reading and writing work in school.

A takeaway homework will be sent home per half term with optional activities for the children if they wish to research and enrich their learning about our topic: 'World Wars'.

Exciting and Inspiring books that might support your understanding of our topic:
