Year 6 - Miss Oakes

Dear Parents/Carers and Children of Class Oak,

Happy New Year to you all!

I hope that you had a fantastic Christmas and enjoyed precious time spent with family and friends. We have a very busy Spring term ahead in Year 6. This term we will be supported in class by Mrs Phillips, who will teach the class every Thursday morning, and Mrs Lawton.

Our class have been very busy over the last term, working hard in lessons and maturing as young people with the great pride in responsibility that they have taken as buddies to the Reception children and in the many opportunities to be ambassadors that have been given to them as Head Boy or Girl, prefects, school councillors, Junior Recycling Officers and in Head of House positions.

Across this term, we will be immersing ourselves within our new topic of 'What a Wonderful World!'. This will see us be great Geographers as we develop our understanding of rivers and coasts in our own locality, as well as those of North America. With consideration of the natural river processes, ecosystems and thriving wildlife, we will explore how natural and human factors shape river courses and life around them. We will use case studies to research, investigate, balance and reason with the way in which rivers influence their surroundings and contribute to daily life patterns. In Writing, we will be using the book 'Running Wild' by Michael Morpurgo to inspire our learning and complement our topic knowledge.

Please also see our Class DOJO page where I like to share photos of the children's learning and further updates and reminders about events upcoming at school.

All homework will be given out on a Friday and should be handed in by the following Wednesday to Miss Oakes. Children will be set weekly spelling homework (either to learn spellings from their Year 5/6 list, or to embed spelling patterns taught at school). In addition, the children will have a maths task each week and their ongoing times tables work. There is also an expectation that ALL children will be reading daily and quizzing regularly tosupport their reading and writing work in school.

A takeaway homework will be sent home per half term with optional activities for the children if they wish to research and enrich their learning about our topic: 'What a Wonderful World!'.
