Year 6 - Mrs Lomas / Miss Oakes

Dear Parents/Carers and Children of Class Oak,

A warm welcome to Year 6 from Miss Oakes and Mrs Lomas. We hope that you are all feeling well rested after a lovely Easter break, ready for an action-packed summer term back at Lindow!

This year, the children are taught by Miss Oakes in 6C and Mrs Lomas (supported by Mrs Porteous) in 6K.

We have had two very busy terms in Year 6 so far and were lucky enough to enjoy trips to Safety Central and a week's residential to PGL at Borreatton Park back in October, where the children made many great memories with each other. All of the children have taken on many Year 6 responsibilities and continue to do us proud in their role as buddies to the Reception children. We also have our Junior Recycling Officers, House Captains, Prefects, School Councillors and Head Boy and Girl who are continuing to work hard to contribute to our school community. Keep it up!

For the Summer term, we will be immersing ourselves within our new topic of 'The great Maya Civilization' and thinking about all things Mexico! This will allow us to reflect back upon the life of civilizations and their settlements in MesoAmerica. With the Maya civilization influencing much of our numerical, counting and writing systems in place today, we will be exploring how their legacy has left a lasting impression on society  some one thousand years later. We will also get the chance to explore the cuisines of Mexico and the links that the Mayans had with chocolate through our cookery and design and technology work. In Geography, we will look at the continents and countries associated with the Mayans, their need to be near rivers as important water sources and the impact that weathering and erosion has had (and continues to have) on the landforms around our World.

Please also see our Class DOJO page where we like to share photos of the children's learning and further updates and reminders about events upcoming at school.

Please note that the 'Number Cruncher Clinic' on Tuesday evenings will continue in Summer term. This will be after school with Miss Oakes and includes juice and biscuits!

All homework will be given out on a Friday and should be handed in by the following Wednesday to Miss Oakes. Children will be set weekly spelling homework (either to learn spellings from their Year 5/6 list, or to embed spelling patterns taught at school). In addition, the children will have a maths task each week and their ongoing times tables work.

A takeaway homework will be sent home per half term with optional activities for the children if they wish to research and enrich their learning about our topic: 'The Great Victorian era'.
