The Lincoln Snipe Fleet had a terrific year in 2018 with three major accomplishments: helping support the UNL Sailing Team, running a highly successful Fire-on-the-Water Regatta, and experiencing exciting racing throughout the season. The Snipe Fleet has generously supported the UNL team by lending several Snipes for team practices until the team can obtain its own 420s. Dennis Miller and Andrew Ozaki lent their boats and supported the team throughout the fall season of practice. On the last day of LSC racing in October, the Snipe Fleet members joined with the UNL Sailing Team in a round of joint racing, swapping boats and crews. This was one of the highlights of the season with exceptional racing and great conditions. Second, the Fire-on-the-Water regatta was sailed June 16-17. Winds were impressive on the first day and moderate-to-strong on day two, making for five highly competitive and exciting races. Eighteen boats raced in the regatta, with crews traveling from Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and Iowa to sail at our wonderful venue on Branched Oak Lake. Six crews from the our Lincoln fleet included Will Thomas and Sarah Thomas, Guy Thomas and Jen Lee, Jim Russell and Rachel Robinson, John Buckley and Mary Buckley, Matan Gill and Mckynze Works, and Vicki Albert and Denny Buffum. The Snipe Fleet would like to thank all of the Lincoln Sailing Club members who helped support this premier regatta with all sorts of help in preparing the grounds, hosting with great food, and serving on the race and dock committees. Finally, the 2018 was marked by great club racing and new Snipe sailors in our fleet making their mark. Both Greg Zimmer and Rhonda Lieske and Matan Gill and Mckynze Works improved in all conditions and notched place-winning races throughout the season. In fact, Greg Zimmer and Rhonda Lieske finished in impressive fashion with a third place in the final series of races and winning third place in the overall Snipe Fleet standings for 2018. John Buckley and Mary Buckley and Will Thomas and Heather Thomas contended for the lead throughout the season with the Buckleys finishing first in the final standings. The Lincoln Snipe Fleet plans to submit a bid for hosting the U.S. Women's Snipe Nationals at the Lincoln Sailing Club in 2019. Together with the UNL Sailing Team the Snipe Fleet has set a goal to host a "major" regatta in the coming year or the next year. We are looking forward to the 2019 season!
