The Hoosac Tunnel's construction began in 1851. Claiming 195 lives and taking twenty four years to construct, the Hoosac Tunnel was finally completed in 1875. This tunnel runs from Florida Mountain to North Adams, Massachusetts, giving it a total length of 25,031 feet.
So what makes this tunnel so magnificent? What makes it so great? Is it because of the money it cost to build it? Or is it because the original reason to build the tunnel was for transportation of materials? It's simple really. This tunnel is so great because of the work and time put into constructing it, the lives that were lost in the process of building it, as well as the money that was invested in the project.
