Metago has just released a brand new version of their ASTRO File Manager. For now this version is available only to Android 4.0 and 4.1 users. Even though most devices do not run any of those versions yet, about a quarter of all Android devices do. The new ASTRO has a brand new UI which is a stark departure from the old clunky interface in previous versions. Up until version 4.0, ASTRO had a custom designed UI built outside Android design guidelines. While very capable, the application was always a bit odd to operate compared to the rest of the Android UI. However this is no more. ASTRO 4.0 has much more Android design guideline compliant interface that makes using the app much more enjoyable and intuitive.
One example is a locations list in a panel hidden to the left of the main panel, similar to the hidden category list on the left in Google+. It can be quickly accessed by swiping to the right over the main panel.
Another example is that now multi-select mode is activated by tapping and holding over an item in the main panel. This is similar to the multi-select behaviour in the stock Android Gallery.
The new ASTRO is great. Get it and try it out.
