BSA National Happenings...

The Lighthouse District and Gulf Stream Council were well represented at the 2015 BSA National Meeting in Atlanta, GA!

The BSA National meeting was held May 20-22, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, GA.  Among the Gulf Stream members in attendance at the meeting were the Gulf Stream Council's Key 3 (Council President, Council Commissioner & Council Executive) as well as some special cub scouters.  Lighthouse's very own Dave Frankland (outgoing Cubmaster) and John Krayeski (incoming Cubmaster) of Pack 141 were also in attendance.  Dave was nominated by the council and then selected by National BSA as one of (50) Cubmasters from around the country to be recognized at the first National Cubmaster's Recognition of Excellence event!
Congrats to Dave Frankland!

During the meeting a 3 hour brainstorming session took place to identify steps units can take to address the challenges faced by the organization.  Following are a few suggestions from the group brought back to share with fellow Scouters!  Consider implementing these into the upcoming program year!

  • - Volunteer to conduct a flag ceremony at your local school's Kindergarten graduation. Our local schools don't have one so we distributed flyers to the Kindergarten kids to share our summer program activities and the date for the School Night For Scouting.
  • - Develop a "parent's pledge" which emphasizes parental involvement and youth protection. Have the parents recite the pledge at each rank achievement ceremony to remind them of the need for parental involvement.
  • - Encourage all parents to get Youth Protection Trained - and consider a live training session at your charter organization.
  • - Access the new materials available on scoutingwire.org- there's a ton of imagery, templates, and videos that you can use for recruitment or just to liven up your communication.
  • - Watch out for scoutbook - a new social media tool, recently purchased by the BSA, which promises to make communication, achievement tracking, and collaboration easier and more exciting for all involved.
Check out the June 2015 edition of the Gulf Stream Newsletter for the article on the meeting!
