Information about Traveling to and around Bar Harbor

If you are coming by plane:

Bar Harbor is easily reached by plane.  Here are your options:

Logan Airport, Boston, Massachusetts (250 miles from Bar Harbor) : Although this airport is the furthest from Bar Harbor, it is the largest international airport in New England and has many international arrivals and departures every day.   From here, you can catch a flight via Cape Air or Silver Air to the Hancock County Airport (Bar Harbor), a short drive from campus.  You can also rent a car at the airport so that you can drive to Bar Harbor via the interstate.

Bar Harbor Airport: Regularly scheduled flights are available to Bar Harbor Airport (in Trenton) about 12 miles from campus. The Bar Harbor Airport is served by Cape Air which is based out of Hyannis, MA, and Silver Air , with information on both services at http://www.bhbairport.com/airline.html. They often have low-cost direct flights to and from Boston that will not necessarily show up in online travel search engines. From the airport, you can rent a car, take a taxi to campus, or hop aboard the free Island Explorer Shuttle Bus (see details below). Local taxis that provide airport service include: At Your Service Taxi Cab Co, 207-288-9222, AAA Taxi and Limousine Service 207-288-8294, and O’Pooch Taxi Cab 207-288-3898.

Portland International Jetport (150 miles from Bar Harbor, about a three-hour drive):  While closer, this airport will not have as many international arrivals and departures.  From here you can rent a car to drive to Bar Harbor.

Bangor International Airport: Bangor has connections from Washington National Airport, Philadelphia and New York; therefore, if you intend to fly to Bangor from abroad, you should book a flight to one of those airports, not Boston Logan.  There are several domestic carriers for Bangor International Airport, which is about 55 miles from campus (a little over an hour drive, depending on traffic).  Rental cars are available at the airport, as is the privately-run Bar Harbor to Bangor Shuttle Service which requires advanced reservation (rates start at $30/person): 207-479-5911 or http://www.barharborbangorshuttle.com/

Helpful Hint:  If you choose to drive from either Boston or Portland, you may want to stop off in Freeport, Maine, the home of L.L. Bean, one of the state's most important and famous purveyors of camping equipment, clothing, home goods, and travel items.  The downtown has become a veritable shopper's paradise, with outlets from all the major retailers.  All the L.L. Bean stores (the campus has at least 4 shops, each with several floors) are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.  For information about L.L. Bean and other stores and restaurants in Freeport, see Information about Freeport, Maine
While in Freeport, you might also want to visit the Desert of Maine, just outside town. For information see Desert of Maine

If you are driving to Bar Harbor

By Car: In Maine, follow Interstate 95 to Interstate 395 in Bangor. From there take Route 1A from Bangor to Ellsworth. In Ellsworth, Route 1A will end at Route 3; follow Route 3 East toward Bar Harbor. COA’s campus is about 19 miles from the Ellsworth shopping district, or about eight miles from the head of Mount Desert Island.  Our campus is on the left (ocean side) of Route 3, just after the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and the Bayview Inn, and before you arrive in downtown Bar Harbor. The address is 105 Eden Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609

Free Island-Wide Shuttle Service: The Island Explorer is a free shuttle bus that takes visitors virtually everywhere on Mount Desert Island. Clean propane-powered buses offer visitors and residents easy access to the hiking trails, beaches, and carriage roads of Acadia National Park as well as many hotels, campgrounds, and village centers.  There is a bus stop on COA’s campus, by the “Whale Skull” near the main entrance.
