Resumen
The purpose of this study was to assess a potential set of items to evaluate participatory ethics in rehabilitation counseling. A Delphi method based on the consensus of a panel of experts was used to begin the inductive process of identifying essential areas of ethical knowledge and practices ranged over the conceptual definition of participatory ethics. These areas were hypothesized to predispose rehabilitation counselors to adopt a participatory ethical orientation during their everyday work. A panel of experts (n = 12) created and rated a list of essential participatory ethical practices from the conceptual definition of participatory ethics during three consecutive Delphi surveys. In general terms, 114 items were considered for the final consensus process. Twenty-six (22.85%) of the items were developed in the inclusive ethical orientation domain, 34 (29.80%) in the working alliance relationship domain, 28 (24.50%) in the consumer involvement domain, and 26 (22.85%) in the consumer empowerment domain. In terms of the decision of retention, from 114 items, 62 (54.30%) items were retained, 28 (24.50%) were retained but needed some modification, and 24 (21.20%) were deleted. In summary, 90 (78.80%) of items were considered to constitute a future prototype of participatory ethics.
These items can be used to evaluate orientation of rehabilitation counselors to a participatory ethical stance through the development of future participatory ethics measures. It also may be utilized by rehabilitation counselor education programs and rehabilitation counselors-in-training as a resource for self-assessment.
