Resumen
The purpose of this study was to survey the program characteristics of institutions offering master's degree programs in physical education; 63.2% responded to the request for information.
The data indicated that the three most common degree offerings were Master of Science (77%), Master of Education (49%), and Master of Arts (39%). Two other types of degrees were offered: Master of Physical Education (MPE) and Master of Science in Teaching (MSY). Most institutions offered both thesis and nonthesis options, with the most common value of the thesis being six credits.
The highest reported number of required credits in a program was 60, the lowest 20, and the mode 30 hours. The highest reported value for hours outside of physical education was 30, while the lowest was zero. For residence hours, 48 was the highest, while the lowest was zero.
The most common number of advisory committee members was three. The highest number on a committee was six, while the smallest was zero. The oral was the most common type of final examination requirement.
The course receiving the greatest indication of use was Research Methods, mentioned by over 80% of all respondents. The second most common course was Statistical Methods, and the third was Exercise Physiology. In other required courses, the most often reported was Curriculum Development.
The most common area of specialization in the MED was the general degree option. In the MS degree, the category for other(s) was the most common, with exercise physiology being second. Physiology of exercise was the most common area in the MA degree.
The highest reported average of graduate students per year was 250, the lowest 3, and the mean 37.9. The majority of respondents did not have a separate graduate faculty. Of faculty teaching graduate classes, the lowest reported number was one, the highest 35. Most of the respondents offered some type of graduate assistantship.
Recommendations for the development and implementation of master's degree programs were formulated based upon the findings of the survey.
