Assessing and preventing occupational-related carpal tunnel syndrome among Puerto Rican workers escrito por Silva, Nyvea, Ph.D., The Pennsylvania State University, 1994, 119 páginas; AAT 9518871
Resumen
The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency of occupational compression neuropathies, specifically Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), among a selected group of Puerto Rican workers during 1990-1992. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, a secondary data source from the Fondo del Seguro del Estado (FSE) general office was analyzed and in Phase II, a secondary data source from the office of a hand surgeon in the Humacao district region was used for analysis. Four research questions and a list of organizing questions were used to guide the study. The general results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. In addition, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Chi-Square analysis were used to test the statistical significance of the relationship between CTS and gender, occupation, age, and length of time employed.
During Phase I, a total of 1,138 CTS cases reported to FSE general office during 1990-1992 fiscal years were identified. The highest number of CTS cases were reported on those municipalities (regions) that corresponded with the presence of large number of a manufacturing industries. The frequency of women with CTS condition surpassed the frequency of males CTS cases: 87.3% versus 12.7% respectively.
In Phase II, a total of 513 diagnosed CTS cases at the HS office between 1988-1993 were identified. The highest frequency of CTS occurred among production line workers (38.8%), cooks (13.2%), and secretaries (11.8%). The bilateral extremity was the most commonly reported site. Like in Phase I, the frequency of women with CTS surpassed the frequency of male CTS cases: 87.9% versus 12.1%, respectively. Also, a significant relationship between gender, occupation and the frequency of CTS was found.
The data provided by FSE presented a number of administrative limitations that narrowed the possibility of identifying the true incidence and possible economic impact of CTS among this select group of Puerto Rican workers.
