Physical educators' goals when teaching a competitive sport unit escrito por Flores-Marti, Ismael, Ph.D., The Ohio State University, 2002, 285 páginas; AAT 3059244
Resumen
A knowledge base exists relative to the effects of competition on the self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-concept of children. Unfortunately, seldom do researchers talk about what professionals in the area of sports, do to help children understand the outcomes of a sport activity. The following study has the purpose to explore what goals physical educators establish when teaching competition to fifth and/or sixth-grade students in a competitive sport unit. A qualitative, multiple case study research design was employed.
Four elementary physical educators were purposefully selected to participate in the study. The participants were currently teaching in the fifth and/or sixth-grade in a public school, and teaching a competitive sport unit in their curriculum of study. Multiple sources of information included audio taped debriefings of the lessons observed, field notes from observations, two formal semi-structured interviews, and the researcher's reflective journals. Sport units varied in length. Each class of the sport unit selected was videotaped. A grounded theory data analysis process (Creswell, 1998) was conducted to help the investigator interpret the data.
Participants of this study established psychomotor, cognitive and affective goals in their sport units. Throughout the sport units, psychomotor, and cognitive goals were applied more often. Affective goals when teaching competition were seldom observed. Further, findings from this study suggest that a discrepancy between participants' beliefs and actions is evident. Participants described several affective goals necessary to establish when teaching competition to children. The applications of these goals were seldom observed in this study. It is hoped that these findings shed light on the different goals and strategies necessary to teach competition in the elementary level.
