The Open Source Liberlab project  aimed in 2004-2006 "to help democratize educational scientific experimentation through the creation and use of a  DIY digital lab at a very low price ( ~ 15 €/$). Liberlab can also be used to learn about robotics, automation, human-machine interface or interactive arts." While still being used internally mainly for automation and monitoring the public project is discontinued. Following requests, you'll find here some partial non up-to-date documentation from the old site. The project was mainly developed in 2005 in University Louis Pasteur.
Code for the firmware and software can also be found on the Sourceforge project page.
For people interested in microcontrollers Open Source projects we also advise Arduino.
