Compare-Contrast Essay

Monday October 4
Students complete a journal entry in their journals for 10 minutes: 
Choose someone you know really well (parent, friend, coach, etc.) and write about the similarities and differences between yourself and that person. Try to write about at least 3 different things.
Remind students to upload essay final drafts to Turn it In
Students read through pp. 176-185 of Expository Composition Textbook. They are to write explanations/ definitions of the following terms:
  • thesis
  • topic
  • subject
  • point
  • comparison
  • contrast
  • point-by-point
  • block-by-block
  • repetition
  • parallelism
- For homework, students complete the practice exercise #1, p. 186.
Tuesday October 5
- Put students into writing groups and have them share their homework assignments. They will put their Venn diagrams into the “writing process” section of their notebooks.
- Have student groups read “Meet Me at Half-Time” (p. 200) and write answers to the discussion questions on p. 202
- Discuss as whole class the answers to the discussion questions

Wednesday October 6
- Students write in journals for 10 minutes
- Distribute comparison-contrast essay assignment.
- Review notes/terms from Tuesday. (Power Point)

Thursday October 7
- Student work time in lab/library to research topic information and begin drafting.
- Rough Drafts will be due Monday October11.

Friday October 8
- Students write in journals for 10 minutes
- Minilesson on citations and works cited pages.
- Students complete citation exercise.

Monday October 11
- Rough Drafts due
- Students write in journals for 10 minutes
- Students work in writers’ groups to provide feedback. This will be group feedback. Students read aloud their papers to the group while the group members provide written feedback.
Tuesday October 12
- Students continue writer’s groups
- Students complete an additional citation exercise

Wednesday October 13
- Testing Day, no class

Thursday October 14
- Assign students new vocabulary lists
- Students work on vocabulary exercises

Friday October 15
- Lab Work Day for final drafts
- Final Drafts due Monday October 18
