Discover & Serve Summer Trip

Join us for an exciting 10-day summer travel opportunity that combines service, learning, and exploration! Experience the unique culture and natural beauty of the Ixil Maya community of Chajul, Guatemala and see (and join!) Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI) in action.

Where: We will spend most of our trip in the indigenous Maya community of Chajul, Guatemala, where LHI works.  We will also visit the colonial city and UNESCO World Heritage site of Antigua, the biggest market in Central America in Chichicastenango, and the stunning Lake Atitlan.

Who:   All are welcome, no Spanish language skills required. This trip is especially for LHI  supporters and fans interested in learning about education and life in a remote, impoverished community and seeing LHI in action.

What:  Learn about and experience life in a remote, rarely-visited, and highly impoverished indigenous Mayan community, while also visiting the most beautiful and known parts of Guatemala. With LHI as your guide you will have a uniquely deep interaction with the community of Chajul. You will get to visit schools, interact with youth and local families, and work alongside community members on a service project. Pick from two trip focuses: Rural Education (with university credit available.) or Community Development.

Trip highlights

  • Share in the lives of local families by learning to make two of the Ixil region’s most traditional foods and trying your hand at ancient weaving techniques.
  • Take an emotional and educational journey into the past, lead by survivors of Guatemala’s 36-year civil war.
  • Learn an indigenous language with an Ixil language lesson from a local teacher.
  • Gain an understanding of local barriers to educational access by observing local classrooms and participating in a Q&A with teachers and school directors.
  • Collaborate with the community on a service project. Past projects have included painting the community library, laying a cement floor in a school classroom, and planting an organic school garden.
  • Hike through the beautiful hills of the Guatemala Highlands, take a boat tour of Lake Atitlan, visit a sacred Mayan site, and shop at the world famous artisan market of Chichicastenango.
Join us this summer for a learning experience of a lifetime!
