UK Wildcat Classic (Jan 21):
Most people are familiar with this one, so there’s no need to say much. The inside seating isn’t great, but this is one of the best run meets we’ve ever attended. Everyone runs under their school in this meet, no club teams can compete.
Knoxville Track Club Indoor Classic (Jan 27-28) @ East TN State Univ:
The track is oversized like UK, with a tremendous amount of seating (best I’ve ever seen at an indoor meet). Competition in some events is very similar to what you’d get at the UK HS Invite - particularly in the sprints and in their elite section mile and 3000. No school teams in this one, everyone runs for a club or unattached.
Indiana Track Club Winter Open Meet (Feb 11) @ IU Bloomington:
The IU Indoor meet was announced on the Indiana TC’s facebook page as being on Feb 11, and is scheduled to follow an IU home meet that day. Competition here is typically club-based, I don't recall seeing any school teams compete. Information on this meet will likely be posted at their FB page, or at the Indiana TC’s website. As I've said in the past, the IU track is awesome. It has banked turns and a great surface, and is typically very fast with distance events. Seating is pretty good at IU, and the competition is usually good to great. My only complaint about this one is “efficiency” and organization, they don’t tend to ever have enough volunteers to help with putting on this meet – so it can run a bit slow at times. They also don't always get out their info very well. Here's a link to last year's meet, if anyone needs to see which events they run and get a feel for the competition.
Ohio State Indoor Meet series (Jan 21, Feb 4, Feb 11, Feb 18):
We attended this meet a couple years ago, and I really liked it. It's a 200m track with a relatively new surface and it seems pretty fast. Meets run fairly well, but seating is similar to UK. It seems as though a decent number of teams usually attend this one, which only makes the seating situation worse. If you attend, I’d get there a bit early and stake out an area for your team. Arriving late with a larger group could be problematic with finding somewhere to sit. Competition includes some of the better Ohio teams, so it can be pretty good at times. Schools and unattached runners compete in this one, and I believe club teams may be allowed as well.
UK High School Indoor (Feb 18):
Again, not much to say on this one. It’s a great meet for the kids who hit the entry standards - certainly the highest quality indoor meet in our State and probably the region.
Western Indiana HS Indoor Classic II (Feb 25) @ DePauw:
Never been there, but I’m told DePauw has a great facility. They also host an Indoor Classic I on Jan 21, and the Feb 25 meet also has an elite 1600 race. I believe this meet allows club teams, not sure on the school teams.
List of Indoor meets in Ohio (Jan 14-Mar 11):
The Ohio State Meets are listed above, as are meets at Cedarville Univ – which I’m told are pretty good meets as well (haven’t been there). In terms of whether you can compete as a school or club, you'd have to check with the meet director for a particular meet.
List of Indoor meets in Indiana (Feb 27-Mar 11):
I’m familiar with the West Lafayette Individuals meet at Purdue (Mar 3) and Mideast Indoor Classic at Wabash College (Mar 10). Purdue has an older, but nice facility with lots of seating. Competition was pretty good last year, with Carmel bringing a group of girls to run the 2 mile. The Mideast Indoor is run on a decent indoor track with fairly limited seating (fairly small bleachers on a second level that overlook the track). Competition is decent as well. I believe both of these meets require that you compete as a school, not a club team, and both involve submitting a contract to compete with your entry.
For those looking to compete in early January, there are also indoor meets in Birmingham, AL, at their new indoor facility. The last of these meets is on Jan 27-28, which may be relatively early for most KY kids. Info on specific indoor meets can be accessed at the Alabama milesplit Indoor meet calendar page.
