Volunteer Opportunities

SCIENCE EXPERTS NEEDED - After-school Science Enrichment

Guest speakers are needed for after school science enrichment groups at multiple grade levels beginning in September.  Sessions that have worked well for these groups in the past:

1)       mini-lectures with demonstrations and/or hands-on activities at school location 3-4 p.m.

2)       Field trips to campus for lab experiences – students would arrive at 3:25 p.m. and leave at 4:25 p.m.

3)       Question and answer sessions that discuss science-related careers (such as medicine) and careers in various kinds of engineering.

The goals are exposure to areas of science and engineering they do not ordinarily encounter in the K-8 curriculum and/or extensions of some of that core curriculum.

If you are able to volunteer an hour of your time, that would be fantastic.  Please e-mail Mr. Kendall (kkendall@lexedu.org) or call 463-5353 ext 3129 to discuss possible topics and activities.

There are multiple other opportunities to volunteer to assist students in the gifted education program.  These opportunities can be one-time events (e.g. guest speaker on historical time period, current event, etc.; lead a science experiment in your area of expertise;  or teach students a unique skill), weekly work during the school day with a group of students in math, reading, writing, or technology, or special after school clubs or events.

Please e-mail Mr. Kendall (kkendall@lexedu.org) or call 463-5353 ext 3129.

1) "Tech Time" Assistant"
– It’s Easy and It’s Fun!

The current “tech time” program for third graders at Waddell Elementary School is always looking for volunteers who can assist with basic computer skills in programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.  Teachers always do the instruction and “helpers” assist students in following the instructions and completing assignments.  The more hands to help, the easier the students learn, and the more we can cover. The third grade time slots are all on Friday afternoons: 12-12:45 and 2:15 to 3 p.m.  There will also be first and second grade slots from 2:15 - 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays right before pick-up.  If you can help with one or more of those time slots please e-mail Mr. Kendall (kkendall@lexedu.org) or Mr. Balkey (bbalkey@lexedu.org).

We have now added first grade to our weekly "tech time" schedule and are working with groups from 1:30 to 2:15 and 2:15 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays and from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. on Fridays.  Please contact us if you can help. Thanks!

2) "Science Helpers" - You don't need to be an expert
Many teachers would love to do more hands-on experiments in their classrooms during the school day, if they only had an extra set of hands to help and eyes to keep an eye on careful use of equipment. You do not need to be a scientist to fill this role - the teachers will always lead the lessons and you just help children follow the instructions.

Contact me if you are able to help: kkendall@lexedu.org or 463-5353 ext 3129.

) Math, Reading, or Writing Mentors
Work with advanced students in small groups - many times available during the school day.

4) LEGO Robotics Sponsor for Waddell and LDMS -
After school enrichment - 3-4 p.m. one day a week (your choice)
Elementary and middle school students get an opportunity to work with LEGO Mindstorms robotics equipment as an after-school enrichment option if someone is willing to supervise the group - one afternoon a week for 10 weeks.
